Bioheat®
(top)
Bioheat® is home heating oil blended with 5% biodiesel. Biodiesel® is a cleaner burning diesel fuel made from soybeans grown in Michigan and around the Midwest.
This winter when you get a fill of heating oil you are going to get something better. It’s called Bioheat®, and it’s made right here on American soil. "Over half the world’s oil supplies are in the Middle East. Bioheat® is different, it’s from the American Midwest." says Crystal Flash Energy President Tom Fehsenfeld. "We’re making this commitment to energy independence because it makes sense for our economy, our environment, our health, and our heating equipment."
Since 2000, Bioheat® has been used to heat homes and buildings. Governmental testing indicates that Bioheat® burns just like regular heating oil - only cleaner.

ULSD
(top)
Ultra-Low-Sulfur Diesel (ULSD) is diesel fuel with a maximum sulfur content of 15 parts per million (ppm). The ULSD is highly refined for cleaner combustion and lower emissions. ULSD has been mandated by the US EPA to be phased in between 2006 and 2010 and eventually replace today’s on-highway diesel fuel known as low-sulfur diesel (LSD).
BENEFITS
- Reduces sulfate pollutants
- Reduces particulate matter
- Reduces carbon monoxide
- Reduces hydrocarbon emission
APPLICATION
ULSD is compatible with all other diesel fuels and additives designed to work in diesel. ULSD will run in any engine designed for the ASTM D-975 diesel fuels. ULSD is required for use in all model year 2007 and later diesel vehicles and engines.
HANDLING INFORMATION
Contamination of ULSD with higher sulfur content fuel is a critical issue. Diesel storage tanks should be cleaned and inspected prior to being used for storing ULSD.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
When will the ULSD rule take effect?
On June 1, 2006, 80 percent of diesel fuel for on road use produced by US refiners must be ULSD. Distribution terminals will need to comply with requirements September 1, 2006 and retail outlets October 15, 2006.
How will ULSD affect fuel economy?
Production of ULSD requires reduction of sulfur content down to maximum 15ppm. This processing also reduces aromatic content and density of the fuel, resulting in a reduction in energy content by about 1-2 percent. This may affect fuel mileage.
Can ULSD fuel be used in 2006 or earlier model year engine?
Yes. ULSD is compatible with 2006 and earlier model year diesel engines.
Will the ULSD fuel create any operational problems for diesel users?
Engine manufacturers are not anticipating that existing engine owners will have to make any changes to their equipment. ULSD is expected to be fully compatible with existing engines. Engine owners should always consult the appropriate dealer for any additional
information.
Which vehicles are required to use ULSD?
All on-highway heavy-duty diesel vehicles manufactured in model year 2007 and later are required to use ULSD.
What is being added to the fuel to maintain lubricity?
Reduction of sulfur to 15 ppm removes naturally-occurring lubricity agents in diesel fuel. To address this change, ASTM adopted the lubricity specification defined in ASTM D975 for all diesel fuel that went into effect in January 1, 2005. To meet this standards,
terminals will add lubricity agents to ULSD.
How will Biodiesel fuel be affected?
Biodiesel is not affected by this rule. In fact, Biodiesel made from soy typically does not exceed 15ppm sulfur and therefore may
be used as an lubricity additive for ULSD.
